Welcome!

Hi!  I’m Jewel and I’m so very happy that you have taken the time to stop in and check out the big plans a brewin’ for a tween bedroom makeover here at Jeweled Interiors.  If you haven’t ever popped in before you should know a few things.  I like eclectic, yet chic, often feminine, and usually dramatic design.  Here’s the thing though, I’m a bit of a cheapskate.  If I can get high-end looks on a small budget then I’m totally game.  I buy things new from time to time, I really do.  It’s just that it’s hard to beat the personality of vintage and antique objects.

Other personal trivia that you may (or may not) find interesting… I am a military spouse and our family of six is currently residing in a 10 month rental before we move on to our 13th home this summer.  Yep, I said 13th.  No Joke!

A huge thanks to the super sweet and talented Stephanie at Casawatkinsliving.com.  She has been so kind as to organize this entire event and I’m over the moon excited to be blogging in such a talented and welcoming community. If you have never seen her blog before then you are missing out on eclectic global design. Very cool.

The Vision: YES!!!

Here is the deal for the room… We have two tweenagers who want a retreat from the cares of the world… and occasionally from their two younger siblings.  These read-a-holics like their fair share of peace and quiet, but they also love to share stories and giggle themselves to sleep.  They want a room that is feminine but not overly girly.

Ok, cool…I am on board with this idea for a tween bedroom.  We have lived in this rental 4 months now and their room, along with several areas of the home, have taken a proverbial “back-seat”  to the more visable parts of the home.  Well, with the begining of 2018 and the commencement of the New Year, New Room Challenge this room’s neglected status is about to change.

Their Room in the Last House

With a new color change, there are very few elements that will make the new room redo, but we are trying to make the next redo a bit more sophisticated.

Decoration Ideas

Here are the variables…because like most everyone else who designs a room I have variables…several really.

1.  Budget:  Yep… the dreaded “B-Word”.  It is hard to invest a fortune on a room that we will only live in for another 6 months.  Well, that statement is only a half truth.  I never have a problem spending money on home decor, it’s the other members of my family that need things like food, clothes, and future college tuition :). So yeah, I have a budget.

  • Curtains $250
  • Rug $200
  • Dresser Paint $30
  • Nightstand $35
  • Pillows $50
  • Bedding $200
  • Art $200
  • Benches $150
  • Accessories $100

2. Time line: 5 weeks…5 busy weeks.

3. Elements already in the room:  This rental is unique in that it came lightly furnished.  We left their bunk bed in storage and are using the two twin beds that came with the house.

4. Shiplap–  Yeah, I know you probably LOVE shiplap like every other red blooded Chip and Joanna fan in America.  Don’t get me wrong, I think that these HGTV stars seem very nice, but it’s just that I don’t want to crush on something that everyone else has or wants.  You see…I’m just not country chic. Shiplap is the one variable that has me still scratching my head.  Let’s see what we can do to work around this issue.  Backerboard and wallpaper anyone?

The Reality:  Ugh!!!

The DIY PROJECTS

The Dresser

With a little love, this MCM dresser could be a show stopper…fingers crossed.

The Night Stand

I just called the owner of this funky little table. Yeah, I know…it’s as ugly as sin.  But can you imagine it all white…or maybe black?  Can you picture it accesorized with a little lamp, some cute books, and fresh flowers?  I see potential here…The best part?  I just talked the guy down to $35 and I’m planning to pick it up tomorrow.  NICE!

The Rug

Ok, I know it looks like it came straight from your grandma’s digs, but I’m hoping a trip to the cleaners makes this ol’ lady lovely again?. Aren’t the colors pretty?  Oh, did you see the price? $60?  That’s not too bad, even with cleanign fees.

The Pillow Fabric

Here is a fabric sample that I have been crushin’ on for almost a year.  I know it doesn’t neccesarily match my usual aesthetic, but it still speaks to me. It says, “You’ve always wanted to use me and this room is your chance!”  I hear you fabric….I hear you!

The Benches

I don’t have a lot of money budgeted for the benches.  I have a few that I have my eye on from various locations (this particular one is from Wayfair), but if worse comes to worst I’m contemplating an Ikea hack of some sort…stay tuned!
