New Modern Sconces, Picture light, Paint, and Sideboard
It is week three of the One Room Challenge and I am thrilled with our progress so far. I can’t wait to show you all of the updates we made this week (new modern sconces, picture light, paint color, and glimpses of our IKEA hack sideboard.
Note: The lighting and other items mentioned were sponsored, but the opinions are 100% my own.
What is the ORC?
Thanks to Linda for organizing this massive event. When you are done here, make sure to check out the 20 Featured Designers and other Guest Participants (like me). In addition to the fun support and camaraderie that this event evokes, Better Homes and Gardens will be the media sponsor.
Before Modern Sconces and Paint Updates
I just want to remind you that we started with a blank slate…really blank.
After Modern Sconces and Paint Updates
Check out the changes!
Pretty sweet, right? You can see that I’ve been a crazy-busy, and there is a lot to unpack here. The lighting and sideboard were according to plan, but the paint color was a mid-makeover switch. Let’s work through all of these updates, shall we?
Modern Sconces
I picked out these modern sconces from Lamps Plus. They are Hinkley Bowery 32 1/2″ High Black Steel LED Wall Sconce and I love them for their scale and height. I needed something tall enough to flank the mural in the middle. These special modern sconces had JUST ENOUGH visual weight to hold their own in the room.
Stylistically, I think they pair really well with the chairs and pop against the paint color. I love the subtle touch of gold inside and think it does a nice job of warming up the paint and not competing with the upcoming chandelier.
One added benefit to these modern sconces is that they are “bendy” and could snake around if being used as a reading light by a bedside. They are also complete with an on/off switch if you need it.
About the Picture Light
The mailman also delivered one more fun package from Lamps Plus last week. This slim-line picture light is 28 inches wide, which will be enough to balance out the large custom Rylie Caldwell Art coming soon. Also, it is direct-wire so it will add much needed glow in this dark corner of the room. I noticed that the head is adjustable so there is some play here to compliment different types of frames. I love the sleek, yet classic styling.
WHY LAMPS PLUS?
I have been using Lamps Plus for years. Why? They have good prices, helpful search engines, a huge selection, and good service. Also, they offer a 60 day 120% price match…so that’s pretty awesome.
About The Paint Change
Some of you might be disappointed, but some of you will be thrilled to see that we changed paint colors. What drove this decision? The mural came in and it really wasn’t playing as well with the red as I had hoped. If you have been following along on Instagram stories you already know that I narrowed it down to three options and let my neighbor pick. I have to say she chose a stunning shade that compliments not only the mural, but other elements of her home beautifully.
If you are missing the red, stay tuned for next year. I have some fun plans coming up in my own home.
Up next in the room
Thursday night my awesome contractor, Richard Mendez, has graciously fit us into his schedule. He will be reinforcing the box for the statement making chandelier that will be installed in this space before next week’s post. After the box gets reinforced a painter is coming in to high-gloss the ceilings on Friday morning!!!! I tried this as a DIY in my master bedroom and messed it up, so I can’t wait to see a professional work his magic.
Still on my personal to do list?

Thank you so very much for joining me on the Jeweled Interiors Fall 2020 dining room One Room Challenge. If you like what you see here don’t forget come back and poke around a bit after the link-up. Oh, and following me is fun too. Check back each Thursday as I transform this space into a colorful, soulful, and glamorous abode.
I think the client played it safe with this shade… it is definitely quite sulky.
Such a beautiful work of art those color selections are beyond amazing.
Thanks so much Rajdeep. You are the best!
Love the mural and the paint color! Excited to see the end result. 🙂
Looks wonderful Jewel!
I loved the red color but I love this paint color just as much!
Thanks so much Sanda!
Thanks so much Courtney
Thanks so much Lindsey. I am too
Hi Trisha. Thanks for following along. I actually think this will be the hardest color to execute and is far from safe. The trick will be keeping it all balanced masculine/feminine and sophisticated/whimsical. Just a few weeks to figure it out.
I knew exactly who that thumbnail image belonged to! Outstanding! I gave been following in IG stories. In love with this color pallette! Happy Week 3!
LOL. Thanks so much Jessica! Happy week 3 to you as well!

This room will be fabulous. Sometimes it’s hard to see the vision midstream, but I love the peeps you’ve provided and am filled with faith. In fact, I’d be thrilled for you to come help with my great room… LOL…. #notkidding #totallyserious. Looking forward to Week 4 already. ~~ Susie from Chelsea Project

Thanks so much Jenasie. I’m excited to see your entryway progress!
Love the look! I’m a big fan of playing with trim colors on traditional trim and light fixtures and you’ve done beautiful things with both.
