Red Earth Dining Room- Jeweled Interiors Fall 2020 One Room Challenge Wk 1
Yay!!! Today marks the beginning of the One Room Challenge . This go-round I will be tackling a client’s dining room. I can’t wait to show you what a difference Metrie Moulding and Farrow and Ball Red Earth colored paint have already made in this space. During this process I am remembering that a dining room is one of my favorite places to decorate, and I’m excited to bring you along for the ride. Note: The moulding and paint were gifted by the opinions are 100% my own.
What is the ORC?
I want to start out with a huge thank you to Linda for organizing this massive event, and I can only imagine the extra effort that Covid 19 has caused this season. Hats off to her and her team!
If you’ve never heard of the ORC then I’m excited to introduce you. This is an exciting interior design event with 20 Featured Designers and hundreds of other Guest Participants (like me).
In addition to the fun support and camaraderie that this event evokes, Better Homes and Gardens will be the media sponsor.
My Other One Room Challenge Spaces
It is hard for me to believe that this is my 7th One Room Challenge. Here’s a recap of some of my other spaces.
Though my house isn’t quite done, I have opted to tackle a room in a client’s home. Pro’s to this project? Logistically, the home in my neighborhood so I still hope to manage online school back at my pad. Also, my neigbor happens to be one of the most impressive women I know, and she is deserving of a vivacious, thoughtful, and sophisticated room worthy of her outstanding personality. You can read into this that she has been willing to try some of my craziest suggestions, and has brainstormed some epic ideas of her own. Yep, pretty much a dream client.
Here is the situation. My client has enjoyed the safety of neutrals for the last decade. This dining room, though not noteworthy, has been host to large family gathers (during non-COVID times) and currently serves as a makeshift office space.
Things to notice here: The carpet, though in good shape, is not staying. Also, we will be replacing all furniture and lighting.
The room is decent sized (15×14.5 ” plus a bump out window). The ceilings are only 8ft high, but we already have dado and crown moulding.
This desk is not staying but the new table, which I am dying to show you, should offer ample space to work.
I’ve been informed that none of these trinkets or tchotskies should remain in the new design. It is time for a change.
The piano was moved to the office last week.
Since we are going with the darker shade of Red Earth in this room, it will be vital to increase the number of lighting sources in the space. She also loves the idea of a modern crystal chandelier.
Now that you have a vibe for the before, let me show you some progress shots from the work we have done in the last week.
We started in that corner that previously housed the piano.
We added two important elements that I want you to notice. First, I painted a coat of Farrow and Ball Wall & Ceiling Primer & Undercoat for Red and Warm tones. That alone made a dramatic difference. If you have been following me for a while then you know that I am a sucker for Farrow and Ball. There is a reason that this brand of paint is used by so many designers, the quality, colors, finishes, and rich pigmentation are divine. Until I experienced it for myself I don’t think I quite understood the difference.
Then we added Metrie Panel Mould 1-1/8″ and replaced the top of her old casing above the door with new Architrave. These are some of my favorite pieces from the Metrie New Traditional Option {M} line. What I love about Option {M} is the ease of use. Pieces are coordinated in collections and the scale is specified. So you know exactly what to order for your style and the height of your ceilings. What’s not to love!
The reason I am talking about these two companies together is that the high quality paint over the panel mould is an knock out combination. Look what happens when I finished up the moulding and added a second coat of Farrow and Ball Wall & Ceiling Primer & Undercoat for Red and Warm tones.
Can you believe this is the same wall? Everything about it feels elevated and sophisticated. I am offering two styling options to pin to your heart’s content.
Now layer in some art, and BOOM! (Almost) Instant gratification.
We are going out of order just a little bit in this space because we still need to install sconces and picture lights for the upcoming art pieces. As such, we are keeping the primer for now. When it comes time to paint we think we will be using Farrow and Ball Red Earth, which happens to be a very close match to the primer. However, based on the mural that should arrive in a day or two, we may switch to Picture Gallery Red. This decision will be fun to follow along in my IG Stories.

Looks beautiful! I always admire your bold colors. It looks so rich. The light fixture reminds me of a baleen whale mouth, and the thought of a well do to and extravagent whale is just delightful.
