Spring 2019 ORC Master Bedroom Big Reveal
Oh, oh, oh, it’s magic! Magic and unbelievable that I made it to the big reveal that is…even with a trip to the Magic Kingdom in the middle of the One Room Challenge. That’s right, despite losing a week, I have done my best to pull a rabbit out of my hat to bring you a unicorn of a bedroom.
Week 1- The Plan | Week 2- The Moulding | Week 3- The Paint | Week 4- The Lighting | Week 5- The Door Hardware | Week 6- The BIG REVEAL
What is the ORC?
First, a huge thank you to Linda, from Calling it Home, for organizing the ONE ROOM CHALLENGE! The organization of an event this size is absolutely a huge undertaking and I am thankful for her efforts.
In case you haven’t heard, this is a friendly event between 20 “Challenge Participants” and hundreds of other “Guest Participants” (like me). All of us have the goal of transforming our spaces with only a month and a half to get it done. As an added bonus Better Homes and Gardens are rthe media sponsors for this challenge.
About Me
We are a military family of six and we are always on the move. At the moment we live in a house that we actually own, and hope to call our forever home someday. As such, we are systematically tackling each room and adding high-end features, such as moulding, door hardware, paint, and lighting to update and personalize the space.
We have lived in this Virginia home less than 11 months, but the bedroom needs to flow with the rest of the rooms in our home that have been completed so far.

AFTER
ABRACADABRA! | When I think of magical rooms, I conjure up images of homes with character and soulful glamour. I think of eclectic and mesmerizing textures and patterns and shapes which defy both era and style….
So without further ado…
What do you think? Is it magical? Not convinced? Well, let me break it down for you and see if I can’t change your mind.
Door Hardware
BEHIND DOOR NUMBER 1: I couldn’t put it off any longer. It was time for a door handle upgrade upstairs and I knew exactly which brand I wanted. I worked with Grandeur Hardware on our entryway reveal and have been itching to coordinate the doors upstairs to match. Last week I showed the horrendous before pics and what surmounted to basically a mini house tour upstairs. What I can’t show you, however, is how much better the new hardware FEELS. The quality is undeniable. I wanted my upstairs door handle upgrade to coordinate, but be slightly more subtle.
I opted for the same Coventry style door handle, but this time I went with a Circulaire rosette back plate. These new Grandeur Hardware handles are just so beautiful!
–
The main reason for installing Grandeur Hardware upstairs, other than the obvious fact that it coordinates with my downstair hardware, is the amazing quality of these door knobs. The black Coventry handles are so smooth and heavy compared to normal hollow handles. The forged brass and solid construction equal extremely smooth turning. The entire family is pretty much in love with this upgrade.
Moulding
THESE MAGIC MOMENTS: When planning out this space the first and foremost important feature I wanted to incorporate was Metrie Moulding. This has been important in the rest of our home, and I couldn’t wait to add it to our new bedroom make over! I enjoyed using Metrie’s Options {M} for all of these pieces (a mix between the Bohemian and New Traditional lines). One helpful advantage to using Option {M} is that Metrie breaks it down by style and scale so that it’s super user friendly. BTW- when planning out a 6 week room makeover anything “user friendly” is good!
This much intricate millwork took a few weeks to finish…oh, and a trip to Disney in the middle didn’t help the timeline ?. The added beauty and resale value make it all worth the effort.
I am also glad that I took the extra time to add a ceiling treatment because it gave my ceilings the illusion of two inch taller ceilings. For more tricks to making your ceiling appear taller, check out my week 2 post.
Paint
LOVE POTION #9: You want to talk about magic? While I don’t know exactly what’s in Farrow and Ball paint (I hear that there are high levels of natural pigments ?), I am beginning to think it must be formulated with pixie dust and unicorn tails, because the effect is spellbinding. This was my first time using Farrow and Ball, and I am so thankful to Thomas Mach Interiors for helping me through the process. You can imagine my joy as we landed on this lovely and grown up shade of pink called Setting Plaster. This is hands down the most lovely paint I’ve ever used, and I’m afraid that now I’m spoiled. Read my week 3 updates for the full product review and lessons learned.
Chandelier
MAGICAL SPARKLE SURPRISE: The quality, beauty, and craftsmanship were evident the second I opened the (VERY LARGE) box to this Piemonte Chandelier from Corbett Lighting. The arms are crafted like beautiful golden branches and the glass plates are intricately hand crafted.
It wasn’t until we installed this beauty that I understood the exact scale and pure elegance of this statement making piece. To say that it exceeds my expectations is a gross understatement, and I can’t walk into the room without smiling at this stunning chandelier. For more details you can check out my week 4 post.
Art
I needed some visual interest to bring life to this corner of the room. I was so excited when Roxanne (from IG: RoxanneGabrielart) reached out to me and offered me not one but TWO of her lovely oil floral prints. If you like to follow artists on Instagram, this is definitely an account worth checking out.
Roxanne specializes in thick, chunky oil paintings, and her florals are my favorite.
Mural
SHAZAAM! I purchased this mural from Anthropologie in February because it seemed to speak to me. The colors and scale were oh so “ME”. As the room evolved, however, I started to question my purchase. If you follow me on Instagram you are well aware of the internal struggle I had with this choice. I had a hard time picturing the mural in the room, but am so happy that I pressed forward with my original plan and had faith in the process.
Drapes
MAGIC CURTAIN: My plan for the window treatments evolved over the six weeks and I eventually opted for an ivory linen trimmed in 5 inch black fringe from Fringe Market. What I like about this fringe is that it is super thick and chunky so that it doesn’t look wimpy on my drapes. Ain’t nobody wants wimpy fringe on their curtains.
Bed
OLD HOLLYWOOD MAGIC: Up until a week ago I had no idea what shape this bed was going to be. As I talked about in my IG stories, I had about 5 different inspiration beds (most of them seashell shaped), but decided that I wanted to set trends instead of follow them…rather than building a seashell shaped bed (which are truly lovely btw), I opted for this design.
It has a bit of a vintage, Hollywood Regency/ Art Deco vibe and I’m not mad about it….at all. I used stunning velvet and trim purchased from Fabric Place Basement, and the end result is a completely custom bed that is oh, so statement making.
Pillows
PATTERN ALCHEMY. Hopefully by now you know that I like patterns…and colors. I wanted to work in some classic patterns that I have been crushing on…like forever. I was so happy to find that Stuck On Hue sold pillows with both of the prints I had been eyeing (Kelly Wearstler’s Graffito | Malachite). I really feel like these are the two elements of the bed vignette that elevate the space and keeps if from feeling frumpy. Kelly Wearstler and frumpy can’t be used in the same sentence (well, this sentence doesn’t count).
To get the custom look I wanted on the rest of the bed I had to do some serious sewing. Please notice that I took the time to sew the duvet cover at a diagonal…just because I I like to make things difficult…just because I wanted a fresh twist on a classic look.

Hi, Jewel! I’ve come out of my own kitchen makeover/out of town wedding/son graduating from college fog for just a few minutes, and finally got a chance to see your entire reveal. You created so much character in your bedroom, with so many interesting elements. And I’m in awe of the I’ll-figure-out-how-to-get-it-done attitude you’ve had through the process. I know it was an incredible amount of work. My favorite elements are the molding, paint color, lampshade, mural, and headboard. I’m thrilled that my pillows get to live in such a stylish space, and I’m glad they were able to add a bit of modern vibe to your space. Will be sharing photos on my Insta soon!
OH Hollie! I don’t know how you are handling the stress, but I am cheering you on!
Thanks for the kind words and thank you so much for the stunning pillows!!!! They are absolutely perfect!
I love this so much Jewel and so glad I found you through the ORC this round. I love the mural and the bed – such a lovely combination. But the mouldings and the beautiful paint colour do it for me. Stunning!
That’s so kind! Thanks so much Vanessa
Hands down the DREAMIEST bedroom ever! The moulding is so luxurious and I am obsessed with that chandelier… Wow.
It’s fabulous.. but, I love the thought and full disclosure of the plan and the final results.
Thanks so much Meryl!!!
Did you use two different rugs here?
I did actually. Good observation skills!
Where did you get the Neon “Crush on You” artwork?
Hi for free on Unsplash.com
This is amazing! I love it! Great job! How did you get your mural to appear to sit in front of the moulding? Is it on wood panels or something?
I’m trying to create a similar effect w a mural and moulding but the only panels I can find are 4′ x 8′ and the mural is 9′ x 6′. What did you do to make it appear the moulding is behind the mural which appears to be sticking out a bit from the wall and moulding?
Thanks!
Hi Vanessa
I used 2.3 4×8 murals and used boards to secure them in the back. Good luck!
Where did you get the side tables?! Oh im in love 😍
Hi Michaela-
I can’t remember the source, but I painted the top green myself. Thanks!
I am still mooning over this bedroom 2 years on! It’s beautiful! Can I please ask how you framed the mural? Thanks!
Hi Becky! Thanks! I secured plywood sheets w 1×2’s in the back and then wallpapered the front and then framed it out. Good luck!
